An honest start.
From A Little Succulent Founder, Beth Sterne
Right after Mom died, I ran into a friend who looked at me with sympathy and simply said, “It sucks.” I can’t easily explain how I found so much comfort in that simple acknowledgment, but I did.
That night I went home to a kitchen full of cut flower arrangements that were starting to wither and die. Don’t get me wrong, when delivered, I was thrilled with the flowers and their accompanying sentiments. But, in that moment days later, I started to dread the thought of soon needing to throw them all away.
The very next moment, my eyes glanced over at a succulent arrangement on my coffee table. This old arrangement had been on my mother’s porch for years. It had endured a few moves and now had found a final home in my living room. In that very moment staring at my mom’s old succulent arrangement, the idea was born: A Little Succulent: for when life sucs a little.
My mother, Jane Sterne, loved plants. She ran a small landscape design business in Atlanta, GA for over 20 years. She was the real deal when it came to plants. In fact, I joked in her eulogy that my sister and I were the only girls in school whose mom drove a truck.
As a school girl, I would help mom on weekends and summers with her big planting jobs. So, I know she would be thrilled that I am now too in the plant business myself.
Mom would love everything about A Little Succulent… everything except for the tagline. Mom would find it silly and would want me to be more serious. But, I am being serious when I say (from experience), “During tough times, everyone just craves strong support, simple honesty and a little humor. That’s what A Little Succulent is all about.”
